A community is not just a collection of buildings. A community is people, people who are involved with their neighbours day to day, season to season. Janette Glover- Geidt has helped to make Union Bay a community through her tireless efforts that the Rotary Club of Courtenay recognizes and has made a contribution to the Rotary Foundation in her name, presented by Donald Gordon and Club President Robert Buckley.

The song goes, "While my guitar gently weeps," but there was very little weeping to be done when Courtenay Rotary Club donated 30 acoustic guitars to Arden Elementary students.

The students were invited to sing a few songs for the club, but at the end of their performance, the instruments were presented to the ecstatic and surprised kids.

The Howies in Costa Rica

Can you guess what type of fish this is?Hola Rotarians from Costa Rica (that's hello in Courtenay English!!).We arrived in Costa Rica on November 15th and got our condo set up. Since then it has been 7:00 a.m. walks on the beach, watering plants, fishing, smoothies in the afternoon, and food, food, and more food. The economy is vibrant here and real estate is appreciating at a great rate. The problem is, there are so many things going on you do not know what to invest in!! It is hard to believe it is over 3 weeks now. We have Albena's relatives coming down on December 18th and staying (some) till the end of January. I may be back home, or stay in my Studio!!!!! The bottom line is: we are having a GREAT time. I just love it here in Costa Rica. If anyone is interested in coming down here, I have all the information.. See you in February..Yours in Rotary, Graham Howie

Dear Rotarians,

I have done so many wonderful things already I don't really know where to start. Today is my first day in my new host family. The Vaateri's live in an apartment bulding in central Vammala with a beautiful view of the snow covered lake. They were very welcoming and I am very excited but at the same time sad to leave my first host family's home at the Sundgrens because they treated me just like thier own daughter. Currently my new host mother, Eija Vaateri, is cooking dinner (which must have potatoes in it cause dinner always does). Finnish food is quiet bland. They are always adding cheese or jam to their food to give it taste.

CLUB #40 .. What does this Mean?

Posted by Ronald Brown
Were we the 40th Club Chartered as some might believe???  Not so says RI. Infact we didn't make the first 100. Repsonse from RI:

We thank you for your e-mail. In 1988 when we first implemented our computer system, for the purpose of identification we had to number all Rotary Clubs. At that time, we sorted all Rotary Clubs by countries and club names and assigned club members accordingly. Then, from there on all new clubs have been automatically assigned a club number by our computer system when we receive their charter.  In our office, these club members are strictly used for the purpose of identifying the proper Rotary club and do not have any other seniority meaning.

Best regards.
